There’s a new club night for people who still want to have an early night

Know anyone who’d love this…

There’s a brand new club night for people who want to go out and have a good time but still get home in time for a decent night’s sleep.

‘Fresh as a Daisy’ will cater for those who love a party AND a good snooze, and is set to hit Bolton this weekend.

The event, which will be on from 7pm until 11pm, will see local DJ John Leather return to play in his hometown for the first time in five years.

He’ll be playing four hours of indie anthems, with John saying he was inspired by former BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac’s recent event down in London called ‘Before Midnight’.

John told the Manchester Evening News: “She’s pioneering a similar thing in London and as a concept, I want to give it a go.

“I think with the way nights out are going, it’s fair to say that the traditional club scene is weaker than it’s ever been. Covid’s had a part to play and I think at this time, the culture of going out earlier is becoming more viable.

“It’s aimed at people who are weekend conscious, people who don’t want to ruin their weekend, who want to go out and have a good time but also be home early. It’ll be indie anthems for a crowd who want to get out early, party early and home for a certain time.”

When he first came on the scene, John initially made a name for himself by putting on indie nights at the now-closed Kico and Blind Tiger venues in Bolton, and is currently on the line-up for Manchester Adored at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in September.

However, John hasn’t been DJing as much recently. He said: “I’ve got a condition called ulcerative colitis which can affect me from time to time with gigs and I’ve had to turn down a few festival slots but hoping I’m getting well enough to get back on the scene.

“It’s been nearly five years since I’ve been back in Bolton. I had quite a bit of success at Kico and Blind Tiger and I feel like the time’s right to give it another go and try and launch another indie night within the town centre.”

According to the event description: “Expect to hear the finest indie classics from the ages from the likes of Joy Division/Pulp/Stone Roses/Arctic Monkeys/Courteeners/Oasis/New Order/Blur/Franz Ferdinand/Gorillaz/James/Jamie T/Kings Of Leon/Kasabian/Ocean Colour Scene/Libertines/Stereophonics/The Strokes/Subways/Happy Mondays/Primal Scream/Florence and The Machine/Arcade Fire and much more.”

The launch event is happening this Saturday, June 11th, at RokitV5 in the Vaults at Bolton Market Place, from 7pm-11pm, and if it goes well John has said it could turn into a monthly night.

A Kate Bush club night is coming to Manchester

The singer was catapulted back to stardom after her song featured in the fourth season of Stranger Things

EMI & Wuthering Nights

Manchester will soon welcome a club night dedicated to Kate Bush following her explosive return to the UK charts.

The singer recently gained a whole new fan base after her 1985 track ‘Running Up That Hill’ featured in the fourth season of Netflix’s smash hit series Stranger Things.

Shortly after the release of the series last month, the song was catapulted to number one in the UK charts, thirty-seven-years after its original release – when it only reached number three.

Over a month on from the Stranger Things hysteria, Kate Bush continues to dominate the charts, with the likes of Harry Styles, Drake and Lizzo being unable to knock her from the number one spot.

So to continue the hype appropriately, a club night dedicated to all things Kate Bush will be taking over a venue in Manchester later this year.

The Wuthering Nights club night – named appropriately after the 1978 track – describes itself as a ‘Kate Bush disco’, and hosts events around the country for fans of the singer to come together and experience her music in a whole new way.

The club night has confirmed it will be taking over Manchester’s Gorilla in October, as well as another venue in London.

The organisers say of their upcoming events: “Get ready to exchange the experience with hundreds of Kate Bush fans in the magical surroundings of Gorilla as we romp through Kate’s back catalogue with an overuse of smoke machines, visuals and camp re-enactments of Kate’s expressive dancing.

“Dressing up in your best Bush get-up is encouraged, slip on your red shoes, stick some ivy in your hair, raid the charity shop for that billowy dress and come and live out your inner Kate fantasy for us.”

Throughout the event, there will be prizes handed out to the best-dressed party-goers, as well as free souvenirs (including a pair of Kate Bush-themed knickers, apparently).

DJs Christopher Dresden Styles (Pop Curious) and Beardre Barlow (Bollox) will also be on duty to play the singer’s best hits across the evening.

Wuthering Nights: Kate Bush After Dark is coming to Gorilla on Saturday October 8th from 11pm until late. Get tickets here.

Blue have been announced as the headlining act for the Blackpool Illuminations switch-on concert later this year.

The boy band – made up of members Antony Costa, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webb – will perform at The Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Friday September 2nd, just days before the release of their new album ‘Heart & Soul’ on September 9th.

The concert comes ahead of a major arena tour, with dates scheduled in December for locations such as Manchester AO Arena, Liverpool M&S Bank Arena and Leeds First Direct Arena.

Singer-songwriter Tom Grennan will be joining the band on the lineup for the switch-on concert, with more talent to be announced in the coming weeks.

The concert will also welcome a 2,000-strong audience, which will be made up of the winners of a free-to-enter ballot.

The ballot will be split equally between Blackpool residents and visitors with a maximum of four tickets per person. The ballot will close this Friday, July 1st.

A VisitBlackpool spokesperson said of the concert: “We are thrilled to announce that Blue will be part of this year’s Switch-On concert line-up.

“They are one of the most successful and best-loved bands this country has seen over the past twenty years and we cannot wait to see them perform in the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom.”

The annual Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On event is one of the biggest in Blackpool’s calendar, and was moved indoors during 2020 and 2021 due to Covid restrictions.

However, the indoor event proved to be a huge success, and will be repeated for a third successive year, this time with a full-capacity audience in the ballroom.

Last year’s Switch-On concert saw Shirley Ballas, the head judge of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, pulled the famous switch infront of a global audience of more than 160,000.

You can enter the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-on Concert audience ballot here.
