Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons respond to calls to ban firework sales

Sainsbury’s has been widely praised for it’s decision to ban the sale of fireworks

Following the news of Sainsbury’s nation-wide firework ban yesterday, Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have now revealed their own stances on the matter.

Sainsbury’s made their announcement yesterday, where they confirmed that all fireworks will be banned from public sale in all 2,300 of its stores with immediate effect.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said on the decision: “We regularly review the products available in our store and we are no longer selling fireworks based on a range of factors.

“Customers can continue to choose from a range of seasonal products, such as glow sticks and light-up spinning wands.”

Since the announcement, customers from all over the UK applauded Sainsbury’s for their decision, noting that for many, fireworks cause more harm than good and can be detrimental to the wellbeing of pets and wildlife.

And now, following the positive response to Sainsbury’s ban, other British supermarket giants have responded. 

An Aldi spokesperson first said: “Aldi understands the importance of animal welfare when celebrating [with fireworks] which is why our sales materials include reminders that pets should be kept safe indoors along with advice on how to make them feel secure.”

An ASDA spokesperson also said: “We know that many of our customers love fireworks, but we also know that some customers and their pets don’t like the noise, which is why this year we have launched a collection of low noise fireworks so that everyone can still enjoy the show.”

Tesco confirmed that it will still be selling fireworks on its website, while Morrisons stated it will be selling fireworks in-store only. 

Meanwhile, Dogs Trust, a charity focusing on the welfare of dogs, congratulated Sainsbury’s on their decision and have encouraged others to do the same, with a spokesperson saying: “Although they can look beautiful, fireworks can be very distressing for dogs when let off unexpectedly, and because they are so easily accessible all year-round, dog owners are on tenterhooks as to when their beloved pooch will next be frightened.”

This comes after senior vets from Vets Now called on the government to ban the sale of fireworks in supermarkets and retailers, stressing that pets are being put at risk.

The internet has brought to my attention ‘garlic bread lasagnes’, and I command that you stop what you’re doing and try them immediately.

Now I’ll be the first to admit that, out of all the many foods in the world, there’s nothing quite as delicious as a slice of garlic bread with a nice scoop of lasagne on top. 

But this was before I came across garlic bread lasagne, courtesy of TikTok food page Food Made Simple, the very people who brought us cheesy garlic crumpets.

Their latest recipe is remarkably simple; to begin you’ll need to cook your garlic bread slices before assembling them into a large lasagne dish. Here, you’ll layer them in the same way you would regular lasagne pasta sheets.

After one layer of garlic bread, cover with your ragù or bolognese sauce which you can either make from scratch or buy in the supermarket. Then, you need to add a generous portion of cheese.

After that, add another layer of garlic bread slices and repeat the whole process again until the dish is full.

Finish with a third layer of garlic bread slices and top with a sprinkling of cheese. Then, all you’ll need to do is pop it in the oven until piping hot and golden brown.

Obviously, TikTokers have been going wild for the recipe, which has had just short of 80,000 views. 

One person wrote: “Wait a minute it looks amazing!” Another commented: “Garlic bread lasagne?! Where can I get these full recipes PLEASE!!?”

Another viewer actually revealed that they’d already given the recipe a try for their family, and it was ‘an absolute hit’. There you have it, tested and approved.

Mum tells her kids Santa only brings ‘pound shop’ gifts so he ‘doesn’t get the credit’

A mum has divided opinion this week after revealing she only buys her children ‘pound shop gifts’ from Santa so ‘he doesn’t get the credit’.

The mum, known only as SJ on TikTok, shared a video explaining she always tells her children that the smaller gifts bought from the pound shop like sweets and bath bombs are from Santa, while the larger more expensive gifts are from her. 

She explained: “I’ve just been to the pound shop to get some bits for the kids’ stockings. I say stockings, I always just do them a gift bag. 

“This is what Father Christmas brings because he’s not getting the credit for the big presents.”

The video, which was posted four days ago, has since racked up over 1.5 million views and over 1,000 comments, where other parents found themselves divided over her method.

Many supported the idea, with others admitting that they also tell their children that the only gifts from Santa are the smaller stocking fillers. 

One person wrote: “Lets normalise not letting Santa get credit for the bigger presets. Always said that about stockings as well.”

Another shared her own experience of making the mistake of telling her child all the presents were from Santa, writing: “This is actually a good idea not letting Santa take credit for the big presents, my daughter kicked off once so I said ‘right I’m taking your presents away’ and she said ‘well you didn’t get them, Santa did’.”

However, not everyone could quite wrap their heads around SJ’s ideology.

One person wrote: “Why would you not let Santa take the credit obviously eventually they’re going to know you bought them. Just don’t get it.”

Futuristic self-driving pods arrive at Heaton Park as part of ‘driverless vehicle’ trial

The heated pods will take guests on trips around the park without the need of a driver

In a scene that wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Black Mirror, Heaton Park has today welcomed the arrival of futuristic self-driving pods.

The pods, manufactured by Westfield Technology Group as a part of their Project Synergy, will be driving visitors on a set route around the park, starting from Heaton Hall and travelling down past the lake.

The driverless pods use ‘intelligent perception solution’ technology which utilises cutting edge LIDAR and Radar technologies alongside AI camera systems, allowing them to be fully aware of their surroundings within a 100 metre range.

New sensor technologies also mean they can facilitate ‘platooning’, allowing the vehicles to follow each other in a controlled formation, carrying up to four passengers in each one.

The overall aim of Project Synergy is to accelerate the adoption of autonomous, connected and driverless vehicles in the UK.

According to Westfield Technology Group, around 50,000 tons of carbon was saved each year at a previous trial of the pods at London Heathrow. They also estimate that using an on-demand pod service system out in public would save approximately 20,000 bus journeys per year.

Two of the pods will be in action from next week as part of a trial aimed at gauging public reaction to them. It is hoped a positive response will ‘provide a compelling argument’ for organisations such as Manchester City Council to consider making them a permanent fixture.

“The trail is coinciding with the Lightopia display throughout the park, offering an even more unique opportunity to see this incredible light display whilst experiencing these new revolutionary technologies.

“We are looking forward to showing this ground breaking technology to Heaton Park’s visitors next week.”

The project will be in the park from the 6th -10th of December.
