Police have applied to extend Mason Greenwood’s bail following his arrest on suspicion of rape, assault and threats to kill.

The Manchester United footballer was first arrested and questioned in January after audio recordings and images were posted on social media by a woman reporting violence.

Greenwood was subsequently suspended by United and remains on bail.

But in an update today, Greater Manchester Police said that an application has now been made to the courts to have his bail extended.

This hearing will not be held until mid-June.

A statement issued by GMP reads: “We are continuing to investigate a report made to us on Sunday January 30th of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

“A twenty-year-old man arrested that day on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman, and threats to kill, remains on bail.

“An application has been made to the courts to have his bail extended beyond Saturday April 30th, but the hearing isn’t expected to be until mid-June.

“The suspect will remain on conditional bail until the date of the court hearing.”

On the evening of January 30th, photos, videos, and voice memos started circulating on social media that showed Greenwood allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Shortly following this, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would not be returning to training, saying in a statement: “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.

“Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Sportswear brand Nike – which previously sponsored the striker – quickly followed suit, saying: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
