Calling all dessert lovers: The UK’s first ever drive-in dessert restaurant has opened it’s doors right here in Manchester.

Though it has to be said, Your Girl Can Bake has somewhat unusual beginnings; the revolutionary concept was founded and launched by twenty-four year old Ikraa Riaz, who was actually studying for a degree in biology.

Ikraa has been baking since the age of ten but never believed she could ever pursue her hobby as a full time career – but, after leaving university with a biology degree under her belt last year, she decided to abandon the usual career path of a biology graduate and set up Your Girl Can Bake, selling her home made desserts and sweets on Instagram from her home in Higher Ardwick.

Her online business proved to be a massive hit, especially over the lockdowns last year so she decided to take the plunge last month and open her own restaurant – with a twist. The young entrepreneur has now launched the unique drive-through dessert service where customers receive a platter of homemade desserts to enjoy in their vehicles – and Ikraa says people from all over the UK can’t get enough of it.

She told the Manchester Evening News: “We are the UK’s dine in your car dessert shop. We only launched last week but the response has been absolutely amazing.

“We have had people driving hundreds of miles from all over the country to come and try our treats. People are coming all the way from Cumbria and London.

“I’ve always had a dream to have my own cafe so to make a living doing what I love is a dream come true.”

On the menu, diners can expect the likes of homemade waffles drenched in melted chocolate, a vast selection of pick n mix favourites, cookie dough topped with chocolate treats, chocolate fondue, brownies and much much more. 

Ikraa runs the business with two family members and creates all her treats by hand, which are made to order and fresh every day for the customers who book in a slot to drive up and tuck in.

The 22″ pies and slices legends Nell’s are set to get even more legendary with the launch of their bottomless pizza and booze offer.

Nell’s New York style pizzas have earned them a handsome reputation at their pop-up residencies in the NQ’s Common and Chorlton’s The Beagle so, of course, excitement surrounding their new restaurant at the city centre garden neighbourhood Kampus has been rife.

The new restaurant will cater for groups of all sizes and will feature a ‘Slice Bar’ where customers can pop in for a quick slice throughout the day and the evening.

All of the familiar Nell’s classics will be on the menu too, including their best selling Original Cheese, Do You ‘Roni Honey? & Vegan Deluxe.

The new restaurant will also feature The Snug, a private and, you guessed it, snug area where you and your pals can get comfortable with pizza and cocktails – perfect for birthdays, special occasions, or just for those much-needed after work drinks. 

But perhaps most excitingly of all is their new Sunday offering – bottomless pizza and booze. It doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

The Sunday Pizza Social will give guests the opportunity to indulge on both the pizza menu and the cocktail list, which includes three brand new signature cocktails; Nell’s Sbagliato, Nell’s Spritz, and Nell’s Sour – though the finer details surrounding the bottomless deal are yet to be confirmed.

Speaking of the new venture, founder Jonny Heyes said: “We decided to make a change from our original concept for Kampus. It wasn’t an easy decision, but we felt like so much had changed since we began this project at Kampus and Cornerstone started to feel like a ‘pre-COVID’ idea, which of course it was.

“Kampus had been intended as the first ever Nell’s but in fact we’re already now operating at two sites – so much of our focus over the last year has been on Nell’s so we thought it didn’t make sense to have it playing second fiddle to Cornerstone.

“Now felt like the right time for Nell’s to step out of the shadows and have a place of her own.”

NEW OPENING: The all-you-can-eat Brazilian restaurant with bottomless meat coming to Altrincham

A new Brazilian all-you-can-eat restaurant with bottomless meat is coming to Altrincham next month, and it looks immense.

Jardim Rodizio, which translates to ‘garden’ in Portuguese, is coming courtesy of Robert Melman, the Argentinian visionary behind popular Manchester steak house Fazenda and King Street tapas joint Tast. He newest venture will be taking over the Old Post Rooms in Altrincham, which has sat unoccupied for over a year.

There, it will bring all the wonderful flavours of South America to the market town and, of course, an abundance of all-you-can-eat Brazilian meat.

Customers can expect a traditional Brazilian ‘rodizio’ meat selection, with an endless offering of grilled meats, unlimited side dishes and salads from the all-you-can-eat bar.

Melman, who has teamed up with his operations manager Chris Milner said on the new opening: “I wanted to create something new where I can add the personal touch again. I love the excitement of bringing fresh and new ideas together and building a team to deliver that. As brands grow bigger that personality can be lost.

“Jardim has been a lockdown project of mine and I am loving the excitement of bringing something new to Altrincham. I have had the opportunity to be creative again and have loved exploring the perfect blend of Brazilian style dining with some of my native Argentina.

“As I never had the chance to say goodbye to my former team, who were like a family to me, I think it’s important for them to see that no matter the situation, you can always make good, even in the most trying of times.”

The details surrounding Jardim Rodizio’s exact opening date have remained tightly under wraps, though it has been confirmed that it’ll be at some point in November.

Chef calls out ‘opportunists looking for a free meal’ who refused to pay bill after eating ‘70%’ of their food

A chef and restaurant owner has opened up about an incident in which a couple refused to pay for their bill, despite having eaten the majority of the food served to them.

Luke Payne has owned and run The Pack Horse in Hayfield with his partner Emma for the last five years, and prides himself on serving ‘up market’ contemporary food not found in your typical pub.

According to Luke, 99% of The Pack Horse’s customers are ‘lovely’ and ‘have an amazing time’, but, on Saturday night, one couple refused point blank to pay up for their bill despite having eaten the majority of their meals.

Luke has since spoken out about the incident, saying the couple were simply ‘opportunists’ on the look-out for a free meal, clearly oblivious to the crippling impacts the Covid-19 pandemic has had upon the business and the rest of the hospitality industry.

Speaking to Proper Manchester, Luke detailed how, despite the couple being checked on by his waiting team several times throughout their meal, they never once complained about their food until they’d eaten ‘around 70% of it’.

He explained: “Despite having being checked back by our waiting team to see if everything was okay, the woman brought her pork chop up to the bar and compared it to ‘fatty bacon’, saying ‘this isn’t what I expected, I don’t really like it, I’d like another meal to replace it for free.’

“She had the opportunity to say if something was wrong or not to her liking, and in that scenario, we would have absolutely done everything we could to have made their evening better. She wanted a replacement for free, but she’d already eaten her meal essentially. So I said no, and informed her that if she wanted anything else she’d have to pay for it.”

At this, the woman’s husband allegedly became aggressive and claimed to be ‘in the right as the customer’. The couple then refused point blank to pay any of their bill, which amounted to £106, before leaving the premises. 

Luke said: “Obviously we don’t live or die by £100, but it’s still a lot of money. That’s a young waitress’ wage for the day.”

Luke ended up charging the couple using the card details they had submitted when securing their reservation online – however, they threatened to get their card insurers involved so whether or not the money will actually come through will only be determined in the next couple of days.

The incident has understandably left Luke and his team disheartened and frustrated, with him noting: “When it’s your business and your livelihood and your passion, you want to make sure that everyone leaves having had a great time. So these kind of things do stick, and it is really frustrating.

“I take stuff like this really personally, because this is all we know, it’s all we do and we do it for love. The backbone of what we do is making people happy, so this kind of stuff brings out a certain level of upset.”

And sadly, this isn’t Luke’s first experience with customers attempting to get their meals for free; he told us that since restaurants have reopened after the lockdowns, he’s noticed a rise in diners complaining about food to avoid paying their bill.

“The customer always thinks they’re right, even when they’re not. We’re professionals at the end of the day, if something is wrong with the food and drink and the service that we’re providing, we’ll know about it. So people should be a little more respectful of what we do.

“Everyone’s after something for free at the moment, which perhaps comes from their lack of respect for the industry and the hard work and the graft and the love that goes into it… People only see the end product, they don’t understand why things cost as much as they do and why they take as long to prepare as they do.”

Since sharing his experience on Twitter, Luke and the Pack Horse team have been flooded with messages of support from adoring customers. One person wrote: “Corr, I wish I was having that pork chop for lunch. I love The Packhorse. These miserly chancers do not deserve your incredible food.”

Another noted: “We came in last week and 2 of our party had the Pork and absolutely loved it. Urrrgghh chancers trying to pull a fast one on a local business – hate it!”
