Waterstones has announced that customers will still be encouraged to wear face masks while shopping in their stores after remaining restrictions lift next week on July 19th.
Prime minister Boris Johnson has said that from next Monday, wearing a face mask will no longer be a legal obligation in England, including on public transport or in shops. However, he said that he ‘expects and recommends that people wear a face-covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with those you don’t normally meet.’
Following the announcement, Waterstones shared an update saying given its ‘enclosed browsing environment,’ customers should still wear face masks and observe social distancing after restrictions are lifted.
In a tweet, the book chain explained: “Following the lift of restrictions on 19 July across England, we will observe new government guidance. Given our enclosed browsing environment, we encourage our customers to wear face masks and observe social distancing, respecting the safety of staff and fellow book lovers.”
Despite receiving a flurry of support from a number of social media users, Waterstones’ announcement was met by many furious customers threatening a full boycott over their decision.
One social media user wrote: “Bad decision, you will lose a lot of customers,” while another quipped: “I make a point of buying books at my local @Waterstones rather than ordering on Amazon because I want bookstores to thrive, but if I go into your store and a member of staff asks me to wear a mask, you will lose my business forever.”
One aggravated customer even wrote: “If I am asked by a member of your staff to wear a face muzzle I will walk out of your store and never buy from you again.”
The book shops’ announcement has come just days after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called for the use of face masks to continue after the 19th, particularly on public transport.
He said: “Public opinion is very squarely behind people continuing to wear masks – on public transport, particularly – but also possibly in essential retail. We will be strongly encouraging people to wear face coverings because, you know, it’s not all about your own choice.”
All remaining Covid-19 restrictions are set to be lifted this coming Monday, July 19th.
Ed Sheeran and wife Cherry Seaborn quietly welcome second daughter

Ed Sheeran surprised fans this week by announcing that he and his wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their second daughter.
In a heartwarming Instagram post, the ‘Shape of You’ singer revealed that he and Cherry are ‘over the moon’ to be a family of four, adding that they are ‘so in love’ with their new daughter.
In a similar manner to the announcement of their first daughter, Ed posted a photo of a pair of baby socks, writing: “Want to let you all know we’ve had another beautiful baby girl.
“We are both so in love with her, and over the moon to be a family of 4.”
Ed didn’t reveal what they have named their daughter, or when the little girl was born.
A spokesperson for the singer later told The Sun: “Ed and Cherry recently welcomed a beautiful baby girl and are on cloud nine.
“They’re so excited for Lyra to have a little sister and the four of them are currently enjoying some precious family time before Ed heads back on tour.
“We are delighted for them, and we hope that you can respect their privacy at this special time.”
Ed and Cherry welcomed their first daughter Lyra back in September 2020, with the couple sharing a photo of baby socks alongside the caption: “Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you.
“Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.
“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here.
“We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed.”
Woman ‘attacked by dog’ close to where toddler was mauled to death in Rochdale
The woman claims the dog was ‘hanging’ on her arms
A woman has spoken of her experience of being attacked by a dog just yards away from where a toddler was killed in Rochdale.
Three-year-old Daniel John Twigg died in hospital on Sunday May 15th following a ‘devastating’ dog attack in Milnrow, Rochdale.
Officers were called out to a property near Carr Lane at around 1:15pm, where the youngster was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
There, he was sadly pronounced dead.
In the wake of Daniel’s death, a young woman has claimed that she too was mauled by a dog while walking on a footpath just yards from where the fatal attack happened.
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, told the Manchester Evening News that she was bitten by a Cane Corso – the breed that was confirmed as being involved in Daniel’s death – less than 100 yards from the scene.
She said: “The dog wasn’t on a lead. It was hanging off my arms and tugging at me. It bit me on my side.”
The woman says she was left with horrific injuries to her arms and ribs, and has been left with life-long scars to her arms.
She reported the incident to the police, but was told that officers would not be visiting the farm if there were ‘dangerous dogs on the loose’.
The woman believes the attack was captured on CCTV, but claims police said there was no evidence of what she was alleging.
She said: “They said there was no proof. I don’t think they ever went up there. They just wouldn’t do anything.
“I asked them if they were going to wait until someone was dead to do something.”
As part of a complex investigation, detectives say they are reviewing ‘other incidents of note’.
In an emotional statement released by GMP, Daniel’s family said he ‘was a happy, kind and caring little boy who was loved by all who knew him’.
The statement read: “He loved Paw Patrol and playing with his brother and sister, he also loved being around animals – especially his pony, Splash. He brought us many laughs and was a comical character. He was brave, intelligent and full of many characteristics.
“Daniel loved being with his whole family and will be missed by all. On behalf of our family, we ask people to respect our privacy.”

Iceland to give all customers aged over 60 10% off their shopping every week
The discount will be available once a week and will apply across all of Iceland’s products
Customers over the age of sixty will soon be able to claim 10% off of their shopping at Iceland as part of the supermarket’s response to the cost of living crisis.
The new deal starts next week on Tuesday May 24th, and will be available with no minimum spend in all Iceland and Food Warehouse stores across the UK.
The frozen foods retailer has launched the new scheme in a bid to help the older generation cut down on their weekly food bill as inflation soars.
It will be the first and only supermarket in the UK to offer this type of discount.
The 10% discount will be available to those over sixty every Tuesday, and will apply across all products.
The discounts will be available in-store only, with shoppers needing to show proof of age at the checkout – this could be through a driving license, senior bus pass, senior rail card or Freedom Pass.
Iceland is also exploring a national rollout of their £30 voucher scheme, which saw those on state pension receive the vouchers over the Christmas period.
Richard Walker, Managing Director at Iceland, said on the new scheme: “We have a long history of supporting our over 60s customers, such as when we launched ‘Elderly Hour’ at the height of the pandemic.
“The cost of living crisis has made support for these customers even more important, which is why I’m proud that we’re finding new ways to support them, including the launch of this discount.
“We hope it will help all those in this age category to cut costs where they can.”
Additionally, Iceland provides a free same-day delivery service for shoppers who spend £20 in-store, where customers can pick up all their fresh and frozen favourites at their preferred delivery time.
Iceland will also keep their shopping chilled or frozen until it’s time to deliver it later that day.
