A man was left fuming after a flat he booked in Liverpool for the Eurovision weekend was cancelled and relisted for a grossly inflated price.

After it was announced that Liverpool would be welcoming the Eurovision Song Contest for 2023, hotel and Airbnb hosts across the city immediately hiked their prices in a bid to cash in on the event.

And many people who had booked their accommodation prior to the announcement – and the subsequently increased costs – went on to have their bookings cancelled by the hosts, who evidently wanted to make the most of a more costly weekend.

Twenty-three-year-old Connor Gregory was one of these unfortunate people, with him taking to Twitter to share his interaction with the host of the city centre apartment he’d booked for May next year.

Connor, who works as a flight attendant, explained to his followers that he had paid £200 to stay in the one-bedroom apartment from May 12th until May 15th, which is when the final of the song contest is due to take place.

However, shortly after the Eurovision announcement, the apartment’s host contacted Connor to inform him that the property was no longer available during those dates due to an ‘error on the booking calendar’.

Screenshots show the text message exchange, where Connor eventually challenged the host on their decision.

In response to the host’s excuse for the cancellation, Connor wrote: “I’d rather you just said it’s because one of the biggest music events in the world is coming to Liverpool and you want more money as prices have shot up.

“Please just be honest and I’d be alright with it.”

In a follow up tweet, Connor showed how the cost for four nights in the flat had shot up to over £16,000, while five nights was priced at an eye-watering £20,295.

He wrote alongside the screenshots: “From £200 when I originally booked, she is now wanting over £20k, what a lovely classy lady, trust you will be dealt with”.

Connor later gave an update on his situation, where he revealed he had been in touch with Booking.com, with the travel site telling him ‘proper action’ would be taken.

He tweeted: “I have been in contact with Booking.com, who has told me that they [the renter] cannot cancel my booking until I have. They have confirmed it’s still mine and they are filing a complaint because of their behaviour and will take ‘proper action against them’.

“The lovely man from Booking looked through the messages and said to me ‘he is aware of the situation’ meaning he can see why she bumped her prices up and is letting me stay there. Let this be a lesson to her to not price gouge, hope she enjoys her investigation coming her way.”

Eurovision will take place in Liverpool on Saturday May 13th, with the Semi-Finals on Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th.
