Comedian Joe Lycett says Liz Truss was left with a ‘face like a slapped a**e’ following his satirical appearance on one of the BBC’s leading political programmes.
The newly-elected prime minister was apparently unimpressed with Lycett’s appearance on Laura Kuenssberg’s new programme on Sunday, ahead of the winner of the Conservative leadership contest being announced.
During his interview, Lycett repeatedly stressed how he is ‘extremely right wing’, with him saying: “I think the haters will say we’ve had twelve years of the Tories, and that we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available, and that Liz Truss is sort of like the backwash of the available MPs.
“I wouldn’t say that, because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that.”
During his interview, a visibly unimpressed Laura asked him to be ‘serious’, to which the comic replied: “I’m not being sarcastic.”
And that wasn’t the end of his trolling, with him later being heard shouting, ‘You smashed it Liz!’ as the prime ministerial candidate was interviewed live in the studio.
Lycett’s appearance on the show was quick to go viral, though it was criticised by the former head of the BBC’s political programming as ‘nonsense’.
And it seems Truss herself also wasn’t too pleased with his comments, with Lycett revealing today that she was allegedly left with a ‘face like a slapped a**e’ in the aftermath.
Speaking to the Radio Times about the fall out, he said: “Apparently she [Liz Truss] got up quicker than she’d been told to. And my BBC source said that she had. And this is a direct quote, ‘a face like a slapped a**e.’
“But I’d be very sad if I’d made Liz Truss sad in any way because she is my favourite politician. And I’m thrilled that she’s going to be the Prime Minister.”
He also revealed that the BBC’s directors had originally wanted to go in a ‘different direction’ on Sunday when they asked him to come on the show.
He said: “They wanted to try and make it sort of bring it out to different viewpoints. I suppose they maybe didn’t realise that I’m really right-wing now that I think maybe they thought I was left-wing.
“I have you know, I have changed my viewpoints over the years. But so has Liz Truss, you know, she was a Lib Dem now she’s a Tory, she was Remainer. Now she’s a Brexiteer. People change their minds.”
Though this isn’t the first time the comedian has landed himself in hot water with prominent politicians; in the midst of the ‘party gate’ scandal last year, Lycett ignited panic within Number 10 with his own spoof version of Sue Gray’s infamous report just hours before it was due to be released.
Lycett revealed to his Twitter followers that the humorous report was taken a little too seriously among Downing Street staff, with a ‘verified’ source who works for a cabinet minister claiming that MPs’ staff were ‘running around panicking’ after seeing the tweet.
