High street giant Poundland is set to open a series of mega stores around the UK from this month.

Since the cost of living crisis shoppers have turned to budget supermarkets and stores including Poundland, B&M and Home Bargains as they hunt for cheaper prices and feel the pinch on inflation. Well, it’s good news as Poundland is now set to open large-scale stores as a result of growing popularity — with 12 opening this March, so shoppers can get excited.

The bargain retailer has confirmed the exact locations and opening dates for the upcoming mega stores. The new unit in Crown Street, Glasgow, will become the largest shop in Scotland at 18,380 square feet in size.

The news comes as part of wider plans for the budget retailer to open or relocate 50 new shops by the end of September this year. The huge expansion plans will see Poundland open half a million square feet of retail space and create up to 800 new jobs.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams previously told The Mirror: “We know how customers appreciate the effort we’ve made in the last few years to transform our offer, offering them more of what they want to buy, week-in, week-out.

“That transformation means we have to step up our search for the best locations to bring the best of Poundland to customers across the UK and that’s precisely what we’ll do in 2023.

“We will continue to work hard to find the right locations that suit the range of Poundland formats we now offer – from small neighbourhood convenience stores to our large destination stores.”

Poundland opened 18 stores during October to December last year, including eight on December 10th alone, says the Mirror.

The full list of mega stores opening in March and April are:

  • Dumbarton Road, Partick – March 25th
  • Parkgate, Rotherham – March 31th
  • Weston-super-Mare (expected to open in April)
  • Burton-upon-Trent (expected to open in April)
  • Castle Bromwich (expected to open in April)

  • Belfast Castlecourt (expected to open in April)
  • Biggleswade (expected to open in April)
  • Stafford (expected to open in April)
  • Ipswich Copdock Retail Park (expected to open in April)

Poundland opened its first store in Burton-upon-Trent back in 1990 and now has 850 sites in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, employing around 18,000 workers. The chain also now offers Pep clothing in around 400 of its larger stores, plus chilled and frozen food in over 350 stores.
