You may remember that last month we brought you the news that The Refuge would be reopening on April 12th with a brand new courtyard area.
Called Waterhouse Way, the new heated and covered terrace is tucked away on a hidden street next to the venue.
The al-fresco dining area has now been completely redeveloped and is ready for food and drinks, with it opening on Monday along with the rest of hospitality for outdoor service.
The outdoor area is well-heated and completely covered with a huge fitted covering, making it one of a few places in the city that can remain open whatever the Mancunian weather throws at us.
The menu consists of the classic Volta travel-inspired small plates, including things like smoked feta with beetroot, hazelnuts, dill, and lamb shawarma.
They’ve even got some big sharers to get stuck into, like the massive Sunday roast platter for two which is available to order at the weekend.
There’s also a new dessert menu alongside some new additions to the drinks menu, including a special Refuge Lager.

Each booking has a two-hour slot and food must be purchased along with drinks. Seats will be limited for the foreseeable future to allow for physical distancing.
Limited walk-ins available only during late evening at the weekend.
Wood relaunches its 50% off deal in response to cost of living crisis
Guests will be able to enjoy Wood’s luxury tasting menu for half the price
Wood has relaunched its 50% off deal to give people the chance to enjoy its luxury dining experience for a fraction of the price.
Following the overwhelming success of its 50% off deal at the start of the year, the restaurant’s owner Simon Wood has decided to relaunch the offer every Wednesday from now until the end of 2022, with the exception of Wednesday 7th and 14th December.
The deal applies to Wood’s tasting menu, which consists of seven courses made of outstanding British produce.
The menu would usually cost £110pp, but every Wednesday will cost just £55pp.
The tasting menu conisists of quirky dishes such as the Some Beef, It’s Bones and Whey Soured Onion, which consists of several elements including a ‘rich cut of British Beef… with a texture like butter’, sat atop bone marrow-fried bread, topped with bone marrow, cured ox heart and tongue and served in a dish of liquid bone marrow seasoned with beef sauce and chive oil.
The dish also features Simon’s take on the traditional Rag Pudding, an Oldham delicacy that consists of minced meat and onions wrapped in suet pastry.
Other dishes on the tasting menu include Owd Yonner and Onions, Hen’s Egg with Truffled Chips and Ham, The Best Bit of Chicken and Exton Rose Strawberry, Marigold and Cereal Milk.
Simon Wood said of the menu: “The finest suppliers in the country provide seasonal, high welfare, foraged exceptional produce, which will be treated with the utmost respect.
“Salt, milk, butter, vinegars, wines, oils, herbs and spices must be of the highest quality throughout the restaurant.”
In addition to the tasting menu, Wood also boasts seasonal and classic wine flights – for £60 and £90 retrospectively – which can be added on the day to pair with the tasting menu.
The 50% off deal will be available between 5pm-11pm every Wednesday until the end of the year – though December 7th and December 14th are both excluded.

Two Manchester pizzas are in the running to be crowned best in the UK
The two restaurants are among just sixteen nominees across the whole of the UK
Manchester could soon be on the map as having the best pizza in the UK thanks to two particular pie concoctions.
Pizzas from the city’s beloved pizzerias, Rudy’s and Crazy Pedro’s, have both received nominations in this year’s National Pizza Awards.
Rudy’s, which is beloved for its menu of traditional Neapolitan-style pizzas, has been nominated for its ‘Francesco’, a white pizza – no tomato sauce – with a courgette cream base, topped with fior di latte, fresh ricotta and fresh basil.
Crazy Pedro’s, on the other hand, is known best for its more outlandish approach to pizza toppings, and has been nominated for its somewhat unorthodox ‘Chicken & Waffle’ pizza.
This comes topped with fried chicken, smoked bacon, waffles and lashings of maple syrup.
Rudy’s and Crazy Pedro’s are among just sixteen entries from the entirety of the UK, all of whom are in the battle to win the crown of Pizza Chef of the Year.
In order to be crowned Pizza Chef of the Year, each restaurant will be required to participate in a head-to-head technical challenge with a selection of ingredients.
Winners will be judged by a panel of industry experts, with the event taking place in Islington, North London, next month.

Manchester’s very own toasty restaurant has launched a brand new menu with loaded fries, jacket potatoes and shakes.
Frankie’s Toasties found life back in 2018 when a ‘typical born ‘n’ bred Manc lad’ decided to share his love of the humble toasty with the good people of Manchester.
Frankie’s was quick to earn a name for itself among foodies across the city, mainly thanks to its eclectic menu of toasties, all costing just £3.25 a piece.
Fillings include Supernoodles, ‘builder’s breakfast’ and cheese, mac and cheese, pulled pork and hot ramen with cheese, as well as some classics such as ham and cheese and tuna melt.
Frankie’s also boasts a selection of ‘sweet’ toasties, with fillings such as Nutella, Lotus Biscoff and S’Mores with chocolate and marshmallow.
And now, Frankie’s has launched a brand new menu with some exciting new additions.
Joining its usual toasties is a new menu of loaded jacket potatoes, all of which can be customised with an array of tasty toppings and fillings for just £4.
Customers can choose from classic fillings such as tuna mayonnaise, chilli con carne and baked beans, as well as some more unusual choices including spicy ramen noodles, BBQ pulled pork, meatball marinara and creamy garlic mushrooms.
Extra toppings include hash browns, fresh chillies, nacho cheese and jalapeños.
The new menu also boasts loaded ‘filthy’ fries and over thirty milkshake flavours, ranging from banoffee pie, Nutella, salted caramel, Snickers and Kinder Bueno, as well as a number of vegan options.
