If you need something to take your mind off everything that’s going on at the moment, then this is just the thing.
Tonight, Tuesday April 7th, a stunning supermoon is set to appear, and it’s going to be the biggest one we’ll see all year.
The super pink moon will be the largest to appear in 2020, with today’s orbit bringing it closer to Earth than at any other point, the Manchester Evening News reports.
While the full moon will peak at 3.35am on Wednesday, April 8th, according to experts it’ll look best this evening, when it rises over the horizon at 7.15pm.
Despite being called a super pink moon, this isn’t based on the actual colour – it’s more likely to have a slightly orange glow – as early Native Americans chose the name due to it traditionally marking the first appearance of pink flowers.
Professor Tim O’Brien, professor of astrophysics and associate director of Jodrell Bank Observatory, said: “The larger apparent size of these so-called supermoons isn’t always easy to spot.
“In fact, the most obvious factor affecting the apparent size of the moon is actually an optical illusion where the moon looks bigger when it is nearer the horizon.
“So as the moon is rising after 7.15pm it should look particularly impressive. You may even see it looking an orangey colour as we see it by reflected sunlight which has been scattered through the Earth’s atmosphere emphasising the redder colours.”
You’ll also be able to see the supermoon tomorrow morning during the ‘moonset’ – if you want to have a gander tonight you’ll need to be able to see eastwards from your house or garden, while tomorrow morning you’ll see it in the west.
