With its very own torture chamber, this place is not for the faint-hearted.
Spook things up a little this Halloween and stay in Britain’s most haunted castle. The Chillingham Castle in Northumberland has been named the most haunted castle in the UK thanks to the number of chilling encounters reported by guests.
Mojo Mortgages, an online broker, analysed the number of castles mentions in ‘most haunted’ articles online, as well as ghost sightings on Trip Advisor reviews, Chillingham came out on top.
The historical castle dates back to the 12th century and has remained in the same family ever since.
Even today, much of the medieval castle remains as it was, with galleries added in Tudor times as well as re-landscaped excessive gardens.
With a variety of bedrooms to book, prices start from about £100 a night for a two-person apartment.
The Coaching Rooms, which sleep 6, definitely look like they could be home to a few ghosts. If you book one of these apartments the castle explains ‘friends stopping for a break from the fierce coaching routines would have rested from the exhaustion of the road’.
You need to be pretty hardcore to stay in one of any of these rooms, with the castle having some of the highest paranormal activity across the country.
One guest said: “We did get some activity and the ghost of Eleanor visited us… she admitted to rattling our wardrobe door and blowing in my friends’ ear.”
Whilst another added “Some of the things we encountered: Someone sitting on my leg, someone holding someone’s hand, two of us being pushed several times, doors opening and closing, cupboard doors opening and closing and lights going off.
