A new Netflix documentary about big data and social media has got people throwing their phones out to avoid technology.

The programme on Netflix is a documentary-drama hybrid that looks into the world of social media, tackling a range of issues from mental health to surveillance.

The programme looks into how our internet usage and search history are being used ‘against us’. Sounds pretty creepy right?!

The show’s synopsis reads: “This documentary-drama hybrid explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations.”

The two-and-a-half-minute trailer shows how a team of engineers are hired to use psychology against us.

A voiceover in the trailer states: “What I want people to know is that everything they’re doing online is being watched, is being tracked, every single action you take is carefully monitored and recorded,”

The programme features some big names in the social media world too – just to make it that little bit more scary and realistic. It includes the likes of the co-inventor of Facebook’s ‘like’ button, the former president of Pinterest as well as people who work for Twitter, Instagram and Google.

The programme has got people ironically taking to social media to express their concerns on the documentary’s eye-opening approach to… er… social media.

One user simply wrote: ‘Social dilemma really scared the crap out of me’.

Another added: “Omg I just watched the social dilemma and I kinda wanna delete all my socials, throw away my phone and live in the woods for the rest of my life,”

A third said: “Everyone needs to watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix. Yesterday.” and another explain that Social Dilemma is ‘one of the most important things you’ll ever see’.

A fourth added that the programme ‘exposes truths about big data, manipulation & warnings from the people who designed social media’. They explained that ‘we know we’re being manipulated by social media & having our psychology used against us’.

The programme also really creepily points out that ‘if you’re not paying for the product… you are the product’.
