As Happy Valley fans speculate how the BBC drama will play out, even the cast are unsure of their fate because they had to film four alternate versions.

Creator, Sally Wainwright, wrote and filmed four different endings to the gripping drama so as to avoid any spoilers, and even her cast have no idea which one she will use as we approach its finale.

Viewers have been gripped on the edge of their seats each week as the episodes have closed on cliff-hangers, and now they’re frantically trying to work out what will happen as the third and final series of the Yorkshire-based crime drama comes to an end.

Amit Shah, who plays pharmacist killer Faisal Bhatti, has admitted that even he does not know what will happen to his character — and neither do the rest of his co-stars.

Speaking on the BBC’s ‘Obsessed With Happy Valley’ podcast, Amit said: “The beauty of Sally’s writing is she doesn’t really create goodies and baddies, they’re all flawed in their own beautiful way.

“When you’re approaching a character like this you’re not looking to play him as a stereotype, you’re just looking for the human qualities and the reasons for why he chooses his actions, and why he makes those certain choices.

“You have to put stuff aside a little bit and yeah, he’s done something wrong or he has a flaw… but why is that? And, how do I make that real and human?— That was my approach, that was why I didn’t treat him as a baddy, as such.”

The actor continued: “I still don’t know how it still all ends up for him because we filmed the final scenes in various different ways and Sally was actually directing those and so it’s quite open and we did different options so I’m not entirely sure how he is going to end up.”
