GMB sparks debate that 70s film Grease is actually really sexist

Good Morning Britain posed the question this morning ‘Is Grease sexist?’ and viewers are pretty fuming.

It comes after Olivia Newton-John brushed off claims that the film is sexist in the wake of the Me Too movement.

The legend that played Frenchie in the 70s movie, Didi Conn appeared on GMB alongside singer Susanne Shaw and journalist Olivia Petter who claims the film is sexist.

Olivia Petter argues that the film implies Sandy needed to ‘change who she is in order to be accepted’.

Speaking to The Guardian, Oliva Newton-John denies the claims saying: “It’s a story from the Fifties where things were different. Everyone forgets that, at the end, he changes for her, too. There’s nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement.”

On GMB, Oliva Petter explained that the big reveal scene at the end of the film which shows Sandy matching Danny’s rock and roll leather style, is ‘the only reason why she does that big transformation…is to please a man,’

People have taken to Twitter to express their opinions. One wrote: “I’ve heard it all now. @GMB actually arguing that a Grease is a sexist film. Stop the world, I want to get off,”

Another added: “I actually can’t believe this Grease debate is even happening.”

A third said, “Honestly the most ridiculous debate- have you all forgot that Danny changed himself at the end too, or is that ok??”

A fourth one said ‘Grease is iconic, loved by generations’.
