‘The cheek, I’d be overjoyed if I saw Gail wearing something I own’

A charity shop customer returned a jumper last week after she spotted it being fashioned by Coronation Street’s finest, Gail Platt.

Actress Helen Worth was spotted sporting the cream knitted jumper from Marks and Spencer, which features distinct multi-coloured threads, on the ITV soap on Monday’s episode last week.

Admittedly, Gail – who has been a staple character on the soap for the last forty-seven years – doesn’t exactly spring to mind when you think of a fashion icon, but does her dress sense really warrant this kind of extreme reaction?

An employee at the charity shop, which hasn’t yet been identified, took to Twitter to share the hilarious story.

The woman, who posts under @Alison_King_Fan, tweeted: “No way has a customer just brought this jumper back for a refund (I work in a charity shop) because they ‘saw Gail Platt wearing it on Corrie on Monday’.

“Going to resell it and label it ‘as worn by Gail Platt.’”

The employee followed up by writing: “This is genuinely the best refund excuse I’ve ever had. What’s wrong with our ICONIC gail wearing it…”

And apparently, the incident even inspired her manager to issue some stern warnings to the other customers in the shop at the time.

She added: “My manager sold a pair of trousers to some older guys who were also in the shop at the time and went ‘and don’t you be bringing them back because you’ve seen Ken Barlow wearing them tonight.’”

I don’t know about you, but a Ken Barlow-inspired outfit doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world…

Anyway, hundreds of people have since responded to the tweet, with many having their own say on the incident.

One fan said in response: “The cheek, I’d be overjoyed if I saw Gail wearing something I own.”

“My sister AND step mum both own this jumper. Have enjoyed ribbing them this week it must be said,” another replied.

Yet despite this customer’s disgust, a quick look on the Marks and Spencer website shows that the jumper is no longer available, meaning it could have potentially sold out – the Gail Platt effect is real.
