Brookside and West End star Claire Sweeney joins the cast of Coronation street as Tyrone’s mum.

Sweeney has said being cast in the Manchester soap is ‘better than being cast in a Hollywood movie’.

It has been announced the soap icon, 52, will take on the role of Cassie the mother of Tyrone Dobbs, played by actor Alan Halsall.

Tyrone’s grandmother Evelyn Plummer, played by dame Maureen Lipman, had told him his biological mother is dead.

In June, Cassie will rock up on the cobbles and face a huge dilemma on whether to confess all to Tyrone.

The mechanic had grown up believing his mum was Jackie Dobbs, played by Margi Clarke, but in 2018 investigations into his parentage brought him into contact with Evelyn. He found out his real mother was Cassandra, her daughter.

It was revealed that Evelyn had left him at a police station as a baby in 1982 because she could not trust Cassie to care for him properly due to her drug habit. It was there Jackie found Tyrone and decided to bring him up as her own.

About her new role Sweeney said: “I’ve watched it all my life and can’t quite believe that I’ll now be stepping onto those famous cobbles myself.

“I was really nervous when I got the scripts to audition as this show means so much to me and my family and this is Corrie gold.

“I was beyond thrilled and very grateful when I got the call that Iain MacLeod is trusting me to play Tyrone’s Mum and work alongside one of my heroes, Dame Maureen Lipman.”

The Liverpool actress, who was first known for her portrayal of Lindsey Corkill in Brookside before going on to star as Roxy Hart in Chicago, will appear on the show on June 28th.
