Things got awkward on an episode of A Place in the Sun this week when a couple faced the reality that their budget did not match their dream home.

Presenter Laura Hamilton was involved with an uncomfortable moment with Sarah and Simon from Gloucester, who were on the show to find a home in Fuerteventura.

Like in most episodes, Laura chatted to the couple about their budget and what kind of property they were looking to buy.

Things started off well but quickly turned a little awkward…

Sarah explained that Simon had retired and their children had fled the nest, leaving them with the perfect opportunity for a new adventure.

Simon explained that he was sure Laura would ‘find us a fantastic property’.

Simon then told Laura their budget of £200,000, saying: “Ideally we’d like to spend less, but that’s our top budget.”

Laura then explained that the property they wanted – a two-bedroom with a sea view and a pool in the town of Corralejo – will require them to be a little more flexible with their money.

When Laura explained that similar homes usually sold for a lot over their budget things got awkward.

Laura asked ‘is there any wiggle room at all?’, adding: “I have got to let you know that a couple of months ago, a frontline two-bedroom apartment with spectacular views sold in Corralejo for over £300,000.

“I’ll show you the best options as close to what you want, but I do need you to be realistic.”

Simon replied: “What we’re talking about is our ideal property and we recognise we would have to have compromise.

“I’m sure you will hopefully come up with compromises and then we’ll have to decide which ones we prefer and which we don’t.”

Sarah then chipped in with very curt response: “If it was easy, we would have found it ourselves. We wouldn’t have needed your help.”

Luckily things turned out for the better for the couple as they found a property with a sea view – quite a way over their budget, however, for £241, 228.
