Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms issued in Greater Manchester

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain in several parts of Greater Manchester.

While the country has basked in sunshine and soaring temperatures this week, the weather is set to take a turn later on today with the arrival of thunderstorms and torrential rain.

A yellow weather warning put in place by the Met Office has now been extended to cover areas of Greater Manchester and the North West, with unsettled weather expected to move in at some point this evening. 

The warning says: “Thunderstorms and torrential downpours may cause travel disruption and, in a few places, flooding.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

“There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.”

According to the Met Office, Friday (June 24th) will be dry but cooler across Greater Manchester, with highs of 21C.

This pattern will continue into the weekend and for the week ahead, with highs of 19C predicted for Saturday (June 25th) afternoon.

However, there will be a few showers, with rain also expected on Sunday and Monday.
