Woman issues warning after finding fake number plates stuck on car in ‘nice’ neighbourhood

A woman has issued a warning after she noticed fake number plates had been stuck onto her car outside of her home in Hale.

Posting into the Hale and Altrincham General Facebook group, Charlotte Grundy explained that she noticed her car was displaying different number plates when she went to collect her sunglasses from the vehicle on Saturday afternoon.

After noticing the colour of the number plate ‘wasn’t quite right’, she went to take a closer look, where she discovered that a fake one that had been stuck on.

Charlotte has since told the Manchester Evening News that she believes her car was being prepped to be stolen and that someone may have been planning to break into her flat to steal the keys. 

She added that the fake number plate isn’t registered with the DVLA, meaning it wouldn’t come up on any ANPR cameras.

Charlotte said other crimes have been committed in the area recently, including an armed robbery in broad daylight. She noted: “It’s supposed to be a nice area.”

Since discovering the fake number plate, Charlotte has moved her car onto a neighbour’s drive and has had a tracker fitted.

She explained that she had her car stolen in 2019 while she was on holiday, saying someone had broken into her house, stolen her keys, and then driven away with the car.

She said: “When I had my car stolen it was a massive inconvenience. I can’t be dealing with that again.”

The Gov.uk website states that drivers can get theft-resistant number plates which make it harder for them to be removed from a vehicle and reused. Drivers can ask their local car dealer or registered number plate supplier for more information.
