There’s been an urgent recall on the popular bath and pool time musical toy Baby Shark after reports it has left children injured.

The swimming singing ‘baby shark doo doo doo doo doo doo’ toy was created after the kids’ song that went viral in 2017 — leaving many parents with an annoying earworm to deal with.

Thanks to the popularity of the song, the bath toy has also become a hit with the kids.

But now the manufacturer Zuru —  based in California — alongside the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, has recalled a staggering 7.5 million of the Baby Shark and Mini Baby Shark toys.

But those who regularly use the toys have been advised to stop and immediately contact Zuru for a full refund.

This is because the fin on some of its toys has a sharp point, according to manufacturers, which children can easily slip and hurt themselves on while playing in the bath.

And, unfortunately a number of children were reported to have sustained injuries after using the Baby Shark toy. However, the mini Baby Shark toy has not had any reports of children being injured from it.

Despite this, both the Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing & Swim Bath Toys (full-size) and Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys (mini-size) are being recalled through caution.

Zuru said it was aware of 12 reports of children getting injured due to the toys, with nine of them requiring stitches or medical attention.

The toys were sold in the US in stores such as Walmart and Target, as well as on Amazon between May 2019 through to March 2023.

A section of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) site warns: “Hazard: When using the recalled bath toys, particularly in a bathtub or wading pool, a child can slip and fall or sit onto the hard plastic top fin of the shark, posing risks of impalement, lacerations and punctures.”

In another action the page offers consumers advice on what to do next, which reads: “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bath toys and contact Zuru for a full refund of $14 for each full-size bath toy or $6 for each mini-size bath toy, in the form of a prepaid virtual Mastercard.”

The toys are sold in three colours: blue, yellow and pink, as well as being sold individually and in packs of three. The recall was issued on June 22nd, 2023.

Since March 2023, Zuru has been making a revised Baby Shark version with a soft silicone top fin — these are not being recalled.
