Once upon a time, before Strongbow Dark Fruits roamed the land, there was a fruit cider named Jacques and it was strong, cheap and flowed in abundance at teenage house parties.
However, the teenagers of today will never appreciate the beauty of Jacques thanks to it being quietly discontinued by Strongbow and replaced with their current fruit cider Dark Fruits around eight years ago (which doesn’t even compare, by the way).
The reasoning behind the disappearance of the beloved fruity cider is vague, with no real explanation or statement from Bulmers, who own Strongbow.
But now, after nearly a decade of Jacques-less (and therefore very miserable) parties, someone has decided to fight back.
Someone known only as ‘Inside Man’ has launched a Change.org petition titled, ‘Bring back the cider drink Jacques by Strongbow’ and, let me tell you, they mean business.
The petition’s description reads: “I liked this alcoholic drink a lot and so did everyone else and to be honest I am a bit pi**ed off it was just taken from us like that.
“Dark fruits is NOT the same its bitter [sic]. So let’s start a revolution and bring it back, that’s all I ask.”
The petition has proved to be wildly popular with the general public and has gained a whopping 789 signatures at the time of writing; quite impressive for your run-of-the-mill fruit cider, if you ask me.
A number of pro-Jacques enthusiasts shared their own thoughts on the loss of Jacques in the comment section of the petition, with Jason Ryder writing simply: “I loved this drink, and it should return to production.”
Pub owner Michelle Harris, on the other hand, wrote: “We used to constantly sell out of it in the kellywine in T/Tree. I want it back to increase my profits!
“I liked the white one most but the dark one was deffo [sic] most popular. And you’re right Dark Fruits is p*ss water compared to it!”
