Tesco shoppers have been taking to social media to express their shock after spotting Christmas chocolates and treats on display in supermarkets across the country.
As the UK sweltered in its second heatwave of the summer this weekend, shoppers weren’t prepared to see festive treats for sale while they shopped for ice lollies and picky bits for tea.
But lo and behold, stacks upon stacks of festive favourites such as Quality Street, Celebrations and Roses were out on display, waiting for customers to stock up ahead of the festive season.
Tubs were priced at £4, though Tesco Clubcard holders could get their hands on two for the tempting cost of just £7.
However, it turned out that the majority of Tesco’s clientele weren’t too impressed with the premature arrival of Christmas, especially in the midst of an uncomfortable heatwave.
One disgruntled customer wrote: “@Tesco, no ice in stock, but don’t worry we have your Christmas chocolates. A fat lot of good that will do me while I’m sat on the sofa with a Solero under each a**e cheek.”
Another commented: “Tesco now has large tubs of Quality Street and Cadbury’s Roses on display if you fancy some Christmas-themed chocolate while you slowly roast to death.”
And a third noted: “Dear God. The Christmas Quality Street sweets are already on display. In August. #Chrisumerism.”
Opinions were also divided as to whether it was too early to start selling Christmas treats, regardless of the heatwave.
Chocolates like Celebrations and Heroes are typically sold later in the year after Halloween, so August is unusually early for such products to start appearing on the shelves.
While many customers criticised the supermarket for bringing out the chocolates so soon, others seemed delighted by the prospect of Christmas coming a little early this year.
One excitable customer wrote: “Saw in Tesco today that they have put the chocolate tubs out for Christmas It’s starting!! #holidaysarecoming”, while another admitted: “Just eating from a Tesco’s Celebrations box right now! Been selling them for couple weeks…too tempting to turn down..and 2 for £7!”.
