Tesco and Co-op will be closing early this Sunday to allow their staff to watch England take on Italy in the historic Euro 2020 final.

Co-op announced today that 2,034 of its shops across England will close at 7.45pm instead of their usual shutting time of 10pm or 11pm.

The retailer said on Twitter: “It’s not just football coming home, our colleagues are going home! All our stores in England are closing at 7:45pm on Sunday.”

Chris Whitfield, Co-op’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We appreciate just how much this means to many of our colleagues and we want them to be able to celebrate at home with their family and friends.”

Tesco quickly followed suit, confirming that all of its Tesco Express stores across England will also be closing at 7:45pm so staff can make a quick getaway to their homes or the pub to watch the match – larger supermarkets already close on Sunday afternoons anyway because of trading laws.

This comes as the Botanist announced that they will be closing all of their sites to ensure their ‘hard working staff’ can enjoy the match.

The operations director for New World Trading Company, Matt Bamber said: “Gareth Southgate has shown us all the value of teamwork in the past few weeks, and how every squad member is vital to being successful.

“That is why we are announcing we’ll be closing early on Sunday to allow as many of our staff as possible to watch the game.”

The whole country will be shut at this rate!

England will take on Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday, July 12th at Wembley at 8pm.
