BBC weatherman Owain Wyn Evans has been presented with the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester’s Special Recognition Award for his remarkable £3m charity ‘drumathon’.

The Welsh broadcaster, who has become well known and loved for his flamboyant presenting style and his talent behind a drum kit, began the gruelling ‘drumathon’ on November 12th, where he played the drums consistently for twenty-four-hours.

The Children In Need fundraiser featured special appearances from the Royal Marine drumming band and members of the BBC Philharmonic, and subsequently raised over £3 million for the charity.

A visibly emotional Owain found out the staggering sum live on air shortly after completing the challenge, where he said: “That’s so many fivers! That’s so many people texting in or going on the website and giving what they can.

“It’s going to change lives. It’s going to change countless lives across the UK. Thank you to everyone across the UK. Wherever you are, there are children and young people who will benefit from this.”

And now, over a month on from the event, Owain’s efforts have been formally recognised in the form of the Young Citizen of the Year award and the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester‘s Special Recognition Award.

The unsuspecting drummer was surprised with the awards live on BBC North West last night by the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Dianne Hawkings.

Hawkings said: “As well as the young citizen of the year, I also have the pleasure of making special recognition awards and, tonight Owain, this is you.

“In recognition of your fantastic efforts with the Drumathon and raising so much money Children In Need, I’m delighted to give you the High Sheriff Special Recognition Award.”

With this, Owain began tearing up, saying: “That’s just incredible. Thank you, I am so honoured.”

He later shared the clip onto Twitter, writing: “So honoured to have received the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester’s Special Recognition Award for the Drumathon and LGBTQ Representation… live on air!! Just unbelievable.”
