While we’ve been taught to never judge a book by its cover, new research has revealed the group of names that are statistically more likely to break the law.
According to the study – carried out by gambling site Good Luck Mate – a person’s name really could have an impact on their choices later in life, with certain titles appearing more frequently in police databases.
The website sent out a Freedom of Information request to police forces across seventeen constabularies in order to gain access to the first names of over 42,000 UK criminals.
And on that list, there was a massive 1,010 male criminals named David and a 117 female law-breakers called Sarah.

For male names, Daniel closely followed David with a total of 1001 criminals of that name, with John, Michael, Paul and Christopher also making the list.
Over on the female list, those called Amy were found to be nearly as bad as those christened as Sarah, with 111 criminal charges to the name.
And thankfully for new parents, this data didn’t coincide with the most popular baby names of 2019, with Oliver only appearing fifty-five times on the list and George just 166 times.
The most popular girls names of 2019 were also less likely to commit crimes, with Olivia, Amelia and Isla appearing just ten, three and one times retrospectively.
A spokesperson for Goodluckmate said: “Our names play a huge part in our identity, but can they influence who we turn out to be?

“We wanted to find out if a name can make someone more likely to become a criminal, so we made Freedom of Info request to police forces asking for the names of people that were charged with crimes in the last two years, so we could discover the names most likely to commit crimes.”
