Mystery mural appears overnight on childcare centre in Tameside

Staff at a nursery in Tameside are trying to find the artist behind a mysterious stencil mural on the side of their building.

Workers at Sunflower Day Nursery were surprised to find the art – which shows a black and white girl watering what looks like a flower stem with a miniature yellow house growing on the end – on their wall when they arrived this morning.

They now want to track down the artist responsible to say thank you, with manager Amanda Ellis saying all the children and their families love it and that countless members of the public have been stopping to take a look.

No one has come forward to claim the art just yet, though many are speculating that it could be a Salford-based artist known as Mr. Eggs, who owned up to a similar piece of art in Stockport a couple of months ago.

The painting was discovered by bemused locals on the side of The Griffin Hotel in Heaton Mersey, and featured a black and white boy flying a yellow kite patterned with a sad version of the iconic acid-house smiley face. 

At the time, many believed the art could have been that of anonymous artist Banksy, who has become famous for his politically-fuelled art displays. 

Mr Eggs’ art can be so similar, in fact, that he himself has become known as ‘Manchester’s Banksy’ across the city.

One of his more popular pieces includes a painting of a child stuck inside a bright pink donut on a wall down Castle Street in Stalybridge, something that apparently addresses the issue of obesity and how it has affected young people in the pandemic.

Another memorable instalment was one named ‘Trouble in Toy Town’ in Hyde, which showed an angry Noddy with his car left on bricks – another message of the issue of road range and violence in Manchester.

Mr Eggs is yet to confirm wether the mural at Sunflower Day Nursery is his.
