Michael Owen has criticised an under-18s girls’ football coach over a vile comment he tweeted about his daughter Gemma Owen.

Nineteen-year-old Gemma is a contestant on this year’s series of hit ITV2 dating show Love Island, where she is currently coupled up with fishmonger Luca Bish.

Since his daughter’s entrance into the infamous villa, the former Manchester United and England star has remained tight-lipped on how he feels about the situation, though he did recently admit that he doesn’t want to see her kissing on the reality show.

In response to this, however, a Twitter account under the name of Paul Proud wrote: “Can’t wait to see her getting smashed,” alongside a stream of laughing-face emojis and a thumbs-up.

Of course, Owen was less than impressed with the now-deleted tweet, and shared it to his page, writing: “What a fine example to set from a man in your responsible position.”

Proud’s Twitter account – which has now been deleted – claimed he was a scout and manager for the under 18s academy at Glasgow City FC, a football club for girls and women, and also a former professional player.

The footballer went on to say that Proud’s tweet was among ‘hundreds of examples’ of messages received about his daughter since she entered the villa, with him writing: “I only selected him from of hundreds of examples.

“Good job I’m used to dressing room banter/ taking stick. And you’re right, nobody ever says anything to your face!”

Social media users were quick to jump to Michael’s defense, slamming Proud’s comment as ‘sickening’ and ‘disrespectful’.

One person wrote: “She’s really good because she’s kept who her family are to herself instead of just trying to use it to win people over. I respect that. I hope this guy coming on now doesn’t ruin that for her.”

Another commented: “To be fair she hasn’t put a foot wrong, she’s a very mature 19 year old, she knows dads watching.”

Gemma was thrown into the centre of a bombshell scandal on the series last night with the arrival of ex-boyfriend rugby player Jacques O’Neill. Love Island continues on ITV2 tonight at 9pm.
