With the festive season fast approaching, we’re starting to see the first signs of Christmas adverts appearing on social media.

McDonald’s has released its offering for 2020, and if their aim was to get everyone crying it’s safe to say they’ve nailed it.

The fast food giants new advert sees a single mum trying to get her teenage son to embrace his inner child and get festive.

The advert features an emotional cover of Forever Young by Becky Hill, with teenager Tom seen ignoring his mum’s Christmas enthusiasm and being more interested in his computer games.

She even sticks some reindeer ears on to make him laugh, but he’s not having any of it and storms off with his headphones on.

It seems a lot of parents with teenage kids can relate, and the advert has been pulling at the heartstrings of the nation.

Paul Mcdowall wrote on McDonald’s Facebook post: “This actually brought a tear to my eyes. Seeing my son approaching his teenage years and losing the joy and excitement of being a kid at Christmas saddens me, wish he could stay that age forever. Great advert.”

Mum Emma Croston added: “Love it – my daughter is at that age – almost 11 and starting to be too grown-up for the magic of Christmas.”

Jennie Marshall Harbinson said ‘McDonald’s u have made a 43yr woman cry’, while Elle Hunnybun added: “Mum’s of teens will understand why this has made me a blubbering mess”.

Some people spotted an even sadder element to the story, with a family photo of the dad and a decoration he’d made sitting on the tree, suggesting he’d passed away.

Thankfully the advert has a more happy ending, with Tom finally getting in the festive spirit and having a snowball fight with his mum and putting the decorations up.
