Martin Lewis has received nationwide praise after he gave away £100,000 of his own money to a debt charity live on television.

Lewis was interviewing the deputy chief executive of debt charity Money Buddies, Salam Shafi, on Good Morning Britain yesterday (September 14th) when he asked how much money the charity needed to help others.

Shafi replied: “It’s interesting. I had a meeting yesterday and I think £975,000 would make a big difference to our charity in terms of how many people we can help.”

At this, Martin responded: “I’ve given to you before. I’ll give ten per cent of that.”

Lewis then added: “If anybody else can help, if you can afford it and have the money to give away… If you’re going to get that £400 [energy rebate] and you don’t need it…”, before pointing towards Shafi.

Lewis’s co-host Susanna Reid quickly followed suit, adding: “Thank you for generosity. I think we’ll all pitch in.”

Viewers at home were blown away by Lewis’s generosity, with one person writing on social media: “Remarkable moment on #GMB just now where host Martin Lewis just immediately pledged to donate £90,000 to a debt advice charity and you could see him then writing the note down to remind him about it.”

The deputy CEO of Money Buddies later wrote on Twitter: “I’m still stunned and speechless. Overwhelmed to be honest.

“Martin’s support and generosity humbled me. The Money Buddies team and myself on a personal note are grateful. We can help more people and keep going.”

Though this isn’t the first time the Money Saving Expert founder has extended a helping hand to the charity, which offers free debt and money advice to people up and down the country.

Earlier this year, Lewis donated £50,000 to the Leeds Money Buddies branch after they reached out to him on Twitter regarding the then-looming cost of living crisis.

Lewis wrote at the time: “If I were to donate £50,000 today would you be able to get things in place to relieve pressure at speed?”

And after being told that the donation would help with increasing advisor’s hours enormously, Martin replied: “Done. Money is ready to go”, before joking: “I’m normally against impulse spending – but I’ll let myself off this one.”
