A new study has revealed that the community spirit here in Manchester is among the strongest in the whole country.
Here in Manchester, we’re proud of our northern friendliness, so the fact that our city has ranked within the top ten of the whole country for having a fantastic sense of community might not come as too much of a surprise.
Commissioned by McCarthy Stone, the research surveyed 2,000 adults across the UK in February 2021 and found that while over a third (37%) of the UK said that they had a strong community spirit where they lived, the regional figures showed where exactly residents had the most faith in their community.

Manchester ranked 8th on the list, with an impressive 39% of residents saying that their city has a strong community spirit. Yes, Manchester.
We beat Southampton and Cardiff, but was overtaken by Leeds, Glasgow, Nottingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Belfast.
Plymouth came out on top, with 53% of residents saying their city has a strong sense of community.
However, it turns out that what while we may have a fantastic sense of community spirit, we lack considerably in trustworthiness.

McCarthy Stone also delved into the overall sense of trustworthiness among communities across different cities and, guess what? We didn’t even make the list!
Miruna Constantinescu, National Marketing Director at McCarthy Stone, said: “I think this survey shows just how important good neighbours are to us across the country.
“We have been really proud of the way neighbours in our developments have pulled together to help each other get through the pandemic, showing incredible warmth and community spirit – it has made all the difference.
“The results show that community spirit remains incredibly high, especially after the difficult year endured by all. Neighbours are literally some of the closest and longest relationships we can have in our lives, so it’s important to build and maintain a healthy rapport because these acts of trust and togetherness make where we live so worthwhile.”
Never change, Manchester (but maybe be a bit more trusting…).
