Manchester has been ranked as one of the thirty most liveable cities in the world as part of the Global Liveability Index for 2022.

Each year, the index – conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) – assesses which locations around the world provide the best or the worst living conditions with the help of its own team of expert analysts and in-city contributors.

For 2022, 173 cities across five continents were judged on thirty factors before being grouped into five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

For the second year, the index incorporated factors attributes to the Covid pandemic, assessing how each city coped with increased demand on health-care services and with the restrictions placed on schools, restaurants and cultural venues.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

And this year, Manchester came out with an overall score of 91.3 – ahead of London, which scored just below with 89.9. While London ranked in 33rd, Manchester came in at 28th on the list, making it the only UK city to get into the top thirty.

Our city also beat the likes of Los Angeles (37th), Auckland (34th), Madrid (43rd), Barcelona (35th), Adelaide (30th) and Perth (32nd). Vienna was the city to reign supreme in first place.

Council Leader Councillor Bev Craig said of the city’s success: “I’m proud that Manchester is the highest ranked UK city.

“It’s great to see this respected survey recognise we already know – that Manchester is a great place to be: A vibrant, creative, energetic and ambitious city that puts residents at its heart.

“But Manchester’s ambition doesn’t stop there. We are determined to become a top-flight world city and this analysis suggests we are making strong progress.

“This is a brilliant city to live in, work in or visit but our goal is to make it even better – an exciting and innovative place where everyone can thrive and share in that success. We are proudly taking our place on a world stage and will strive to improve further.”
