If you’re fed up of feeling permanently knackered, you’re not alone, because Manchester is apparently one of the most sleep-deprived areas of the country during the festive period.

Yep, an eye-opening new study conducted by bed company Beds Divans has revealed that, this month, Mancunians are among the most tired in the whole of England. Hardly surprising news, I write as I sip my fifth coffee of the day.

The study analysed forecasted search trends of sleep-related terms over the course of December along with noise pollution data, and ultimately ranked Manchester in sixth place with an eerie insomnia score of 666.

The results showed that Mancunians are expected to have an average of over 647 searches related to poor sleep this December, a 71% increase in search volume per capita compared to London, which ranked in first place with a worrying insomnia score of 6,112.

Other cities with terrible sleep quality over the festive period are Birmingham, which ranked in second place with an insomnia score of 1,162, Leeds in fourth with a score of 773 and Liverpool in fifth with a score of 740.

Though worry not! Sleep expert Neil Wright from Beds Divans has offered a bit of advice on how to sleep over the festive period.

He said: “During Christmas, people often experience disruptions in their sleep patterns, but don’t worry, there are a few things we can do to stay on track.

“If you’re a coffee drinker, try and limit your caffeine consumption between 6 to 8 hours before bed.

“Another tip is to try to avoid exposure to blue light in the evening. Studies have shown that staring at your mobile phone and tv screen can have a negative effect on the production of melatonin (the body’s sleep hormone), which can disrupt your sleeping schedule.”
