Laura Nuttall’s mum has spoken of her heartbreak after her daughter’s brain tumour grew back within days of being removed.

Laura, from Barrowford in Lancashire, was given just twelve months to live after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in October 2018.

However, the twenty-two-year-old went on to defy all odds following the bleak diagnosis and has completed an impressive bucket list since, including graduating from the University of Manchester, commanding a Royal Navy warship and even presenting the a BBC weather forecast.

And in 2021, comedian Peter Kay revealed he would be hosting a number of charity gigs in order to raise money for Laura’s treatment

However, Laura’s mum Nicola has now revealed that her tumour has grown back just two weeks after undergoing major surgery to remove it.

Announcing that the family plan to ‘move Christmas forward’, Nicola wrote on Twitter: “Bad news I’m afraid. Laura’s tumour has grown back within 2 wks of surgery & moved into new areas of the brain, explaining her headaches.

“Radiotherapy has been brought forward to Monday but things feel pretty bleak. We’re thinking of moving Christmas forward. My heart is broken.”

She added that her family had ‘thoroughly investigated’ a number of alternative treatments, but explained that Laura was ‘not a suitable candidate’ and she ‘already takes cannabis oil’, which can be used to treat some cancers.

Speaking previously about Peter Kay’s fundraising efforts, Laura explained that her family had been ‘slogging away’ at fundraising for her treatment – immunisation in Germany – that was ‘phenomenally expensive.’

She added: “So having this from Peter just takes the pressure off so much.”

The family have remained in touch with Kay, with Nicola saying they had been out to the pub with him twice where, instead of talking about Laura’s illness and treatment, they ‘laugh our heads off.’

She said: “He’s just the best company.”
