Lancashire County Council has vowed to ‘try harder’ after accidentally leaving a glaring typo on a local school’s bus stop sign.

Last week, Lancaster Royal Grammar School’s headmaster Chris Pyle noticed that the council had spelt the word ‘grammar’ as ‘grammer’ in the school’s title on the sign.

He shared a photo of the very noticeable typo on Twitter, tagging the council and writing: “Umm…”.

The photo was quick to go viral, with teachers and former pupils alike offering some hilarious responses – the school’s own Twitter page even ordering the council to ‘write out Royal Grammar School 50 times!’

In an attempt to rectify its reputation, Lancashire Country Council replied to the photo, writing: “The irony of this unfortunate spelling error is not lost on the county council.

“This schoolboy error does certainly not meet Lancaster Grammar’s exceptionally high standards.

“Rest assured, we will correct this mistake and replace the bus stop plates over the coming days.”

A spokesperson for the council added: “We’re glad people have been able to see the funny side and would like to reassure everyone that we will try harder in the future.”

Mr. Pyle later said he was ‘delighted’ that he and his school have helped the council to improve their English.

He said: “We are enjoying the irony but will keep on trying to teach the world how to spell ‘grammar’ correctly.

“The new sign has definitely brought some laughter.

“Teachers are used to correcting spelling mistakes, and both pupils and teachers have enjoyed seeing this real world example on our doorstep.”
