A lorry driver has been hailed a hero after he set up a television in his vehicle so stranded motorists could watch England’s Euros match against Germany.

Hundreds of drivers were left stranded on the motorway after a Carling lorry burst into flames yesterday afternoon, causing severe delays.

The M62 westbound was closed shortly after 1pm, resulting in miles of queues and stationary vehicles – at one point, the traffic was queueing as far back as Ainley Top, near Huddersfield.

The closure sadly dashed all hopes of those wanting to get home (or to the pub) in time for the 5pm kick off.

Stranded football fans were taking to Twitter to express their frustration all afternoon, with one writing: “Good luck to the England team tonight – due to an inexplicable bit of planning, I’ll be on the M62 for most of the game.”

Another commented: “Can’t believe that my mate (who I’m meant to be watching the England match with) is stuck on the M62 because a lorry of CARLING has burst into flames.”

But luckily for them, one lorry driver came to the rescue.

A photo taken by a fellow motorist showed how an unidentified – yet evidently kind-hearted – lorry driver set up a television from his vehicle so that other drivers could watch the match from the motorway.

The picture shared on social media shows football fans gathered around the small television set as they cheered on England during the game.

After fifty-five years without a knockout tie victory against Germany, England defeated their old rivals 2-0 in a stunning display and ultimately secured their place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals, which will take place against Ukraine this weekend.
