A hairdresser has gone viral online after sharing a shocking video that shows why it pays to spend a little more on hair products.

One expert has shared why it might be better, in the long run, to spend a little more on more expensive and professional salon shampoo and conditioners.

Although it can be pretty disheartening to spend your hard-earned money on something that literally washes down the drain, it might be more cost-effective in the long run.

If you get your hair bleached or dyed you know just how expensive that can be and using cheaper products might mean you have to do this more as they can strip your hair of colour.

Hairdresser and beauty salon owner Rachel Serafini shared a video back in 2017 using hair extensions and two different shampoos to demonstrate the different effects they will have on your hair.

Using Unit 7 Seconds Shampoo which costs £19.95 and Tresemmé’s 24 Hour Body Shampoo which costs just £5.14 for a massive 900ml bottle at Boots, Rachel washes two different hair extension pieces and the results are shocking.

Dying the two extensions purple before washing them, the colour quickly washes out into the two cups of water each with a squeeze of the different shampoos in.

The first extension piece, put in the cup with Unite shampoo turns the water a misty, grey colour following a wash.

The second extension piece is put into the cup with water and the Tresemmé shampoo and within seconds the cup turns a vibrant purple.

She captioned the post: “Did my own little experiment. Professional Salon Product VS. Drug store product.”

The video went viral and has seen a resurgence in recent years with a whopping 17,000 comments.

Not everyone is convinced though, one person wrote: “Well I wouldn’t use either of these shampoos as the expensive one is full of silicones and the cheap one has harsh cleansers.”

Another added: “I have used Tresemmé a lot and neverrrr my colour faded like that!!!”

Most hairdressers will advise you to wash your hair less and opt for dry shampoo to help your colour last longer between trips to the salon.
