Someone hacked Staffordshire’s electronic road signs this week, calling for ‘idiot’ drivers to go home in lockdown.
An investigation is currently underway as to who hacked the boards and changed the signs.
One message read: “Go back to Swad you idiots. We are supposed to be in lockdown.” With a second message thanking Karens for putting in complaints.
Others thought the hacker deserved a medal for making people smile, one person added: “Not all heroes wear capes.”
Facebook group Burton News reports that one wrote: “Lovely welcome on my way into Burton this morning (note: sarcasm). It’s getting ridiculous now and the people responsible for this should be fired immediately.
“It’s 100% unacceptable. I’ve put my complaint in to your council.”
The complaint from a woman (who was actually called Karen) ended up on the signs in response, reading: “Do you want to speak to a manager Karen?”
One resident says: “I actually think it will do the highways a favour.
“The majority of people drive past these signs barely glancing at them…at least now people will be actually looking at them for messages, proposals etc lol”.
A third wrote: “If and when you do find this despicable hacker, offer them a job and nominate them for a Nobel Prize! It’s about time the signs were actually informative!”
A fourth asked for people to stop using ‘Karen’ to describe a nasty person, writing: “No comments on what the lady had said but I must admit I don’t like the way one name has started being used as a description for a nasty person generally.
“That sign’s great, we all need a laugh. Hopefully she is feeling less Grumpy today.”
The messages were up for much of Monday, and it’s not yet been confirmed if Staffordshire was the only area affected.
