New CGI images have offered the first look at Manchester’s all-electric Co-op Live arena, which is set to feature an innovative ‘smart bowl’.

The smart bowl, designed with an intimate atmosphere in mind, will feature no corporate branding, ensuring both the fan and artist can fully immerse themselves in the show.

The suites lining the edges of Level 2 will also utilise soundproof black curtains to maximise the impact of the shows sound and lighting.

Co-op Live, which is billed to be the UK’s only music-first arena as well as the country’s first all-electric venue, will boast the largest floor space of any indoor venue, a significantly lower ceiling, and tiered seating that brings fans closer to the artist.

The president of OVG International, Jessica Koravos, said of the new venue: “Co-op Live is about the fan and the artist, it is specially designed to deliver the best sound, atmosphere and experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

“Innovative technology and design will bring a unique live entertainment experience to the UK.”

Co-op Live will have a 23,500-capacity venue – the biggest in the UK – and is currently under construction on Manchester’s Etihad Campus. It is set to open in December 2023.

Unlike traditional arenas, Co-op Live will use electricity for everything from air-source heat pumps for heating and domestic hot water, through to cooling and catering.

Rooftop solar panels will be used to power day-to-day activity, with green electricity from the grid topping up capacity for events.

As a result of the switch-over from boilers to electric alternatives, the arena’s design achieves over a 50% reduction in energy usage compared to similar arenas of its size.

There will also be a significant air quality improvement due to the avoidance of on-site fuel burning, with the design enabling a 23% reduction in carbon emissions.

And, crucially, the arena will also be on track towards achieving net zero carbon by Manchester City Council’s target of 2038 by building electric-based infrastructure from the very beginning.

Co-Op Live is expected to be complete in December 2023. Head over to the official Co-Op Live website for more information.
