An ‘exhausted’ dog had to be carried down Scafell Pike by a mountain rescue team.

The thirteen volunteers carried the canine down from Britain’s highest mountain in a four-hour rescue mission.

They were called out at approximately 6.25pm on Saturday May 13th, to reports of an ‘injured and exhausted dog’ who was ‘refusing to move’ — as they requested support while on a return walk to Langdale having climbed Scafell Pike.

The 33kg (5st 3lb) dog was with its owners who ‘were starting to feel the cold’.

They were encouraged to try to descend towards the Keswick Team.

A spokesperson for Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said ‘it was a joy to carry such a relatively lightweight casualty’ and the dog ‘remained cool, calm and positively regal throughout!’.

On its rescue page, the Keswick team wrote: “The Keswick team met the casualty and owners high up Grains Gill. The casualty was made comfortable in a ‘cas bag’ on the stretcher and sledged/carried back to Seathwaite Farm.

“Despite being quite a large dog at 33kg it was a joy to carry such a relatively lightweight casualty. The casualty remained cool, calm and positively regal throughout!

“The casualty and owners were given a lift to Keswick Team Base where other members of their party collected them.”

The rescue operation took four hours and 18 minutes, using 13 volunteer members. It was the team’s 42nd mission of 2023.
