While England’s Euros defeat to Italy has hit the nation’s morale like a ton of bricks, there is one moment from the tense match that is still managing to lift the spirits of wounded football fans.

Prince George attended the historic match with parents Prince William and Kate Middleton, where he watched on in a suit and tie from Wembley’s royal box.

Yet, as Manchester United’s Luke Shaw scored England’s first and only goal within the first two minutes, the future King of England lost all royal composure and jumped and cheered jubilantly before embracing his parents.

It was truly the most heartwarming moment, and social media users were quick to comment on how fantastic it was to see a more human side to the royals.

One person wrote: “I’m convinced that Prince George is the lucky charm for England, look at him here celebrating the first goal!”

While another commented: “Loved Prince George’s reaction to the goal, with hugs for mum and joy with dad, it melted my heart a little…”

However, the high spirits weren’t to last, and Prince George’s dismayed face as Italy were crowned champions of Europe was also quick to circulate online.

The royals had been rooting for England’s success – in a speech to the squad ahead of the match, Prince William wished them ‘the very best of luck.’

He said: “I can’t really believe this is happening. Gareth, Harry, and to every member of the England team on and off the pitch, I just want to wish you the very best of luck for tonight.

“What a team performance it’s been. Every member of the squad has played their part, and all the back room team as well have been truly essential. You bring out the very best of England and we are all behind you.

“The whole country is behind you. So, bring it home.”

Italy were crowned European champions last night after defeating England in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw and extra time.
