Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodríguez have shared the first photo of their newborn daughter following the tragic death of their twin son.
Three days on from the tragedy, the couple captured their first moments at home with their daughter and four older children, noting their gratitude for ‘the life that we’ve just welcomed into this world’.
Captioning the family photo, the footballer wrote: “Home sweet home. Gio and our baby girl are finally together with us.
“We want to thank everyone for all the kind words and gestures. Your support is very important and we all felt the love and respect that you have for our family.
“Now it’s time to be grateful for the life that we’ve just welcomed into this world.”
Their statement read: “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest paint that any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”
Ronaldo went on to thank the doctors and nurses for ‘all their expert care and support’, before asking for privacy during this ‘very difficult time’.
The statement concluded: “Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
The tributes and messages of condolence were quick to flood in, with Manchester United posting a short statement on Twitter, writing: “Your pain is our pain, Cristiano.”
His teammates Marcus Rashford and David de Gea also posted their own tributes, with Rashford writing: “Thoughts are with you and Georgina brother. I’m so sorry.”
And during the seventh minute of Man United’s Premier League match against Liverpool on Tuesday night, Liverpool supporters sang the team’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ as United fans gave a round of applause in tribute to the footballer’s son.
Ronaldo later expressed his gratitude for the support from the football rivals, writing on social media: “One world… One sport… One global family… Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion.”
