A company boss has come under fire this week for their ‘extreme’ rule when it comes to lateness and punctuality.
While being on time is a crucial part of an effective workforce, this employer – who hasn’t been identified – clearly takes punctuality very seriously, so much so that they curated their own lateness policy.
A printed out notice written by the straight-laced boss was originally shared onto Reddit by a former employee to show just how dire the working conditions were in ‘the worst place I ever worked’.
The printed out notice reads: “New office rule: For every minute you are late for work, you will be required to work for 10 minutes after 6pm. For example, if you arrive at 10:02, you will have to stay an extra 20 minutes until 6:20pm. Thanks.”
The former employee explained that she earned minimum wage at the company, and didn’t get paid overtime for any extra hours she had to work under the stringent rule.
She explained that it was a ‘crap’ job she got shortly after leaving university and, quite understandably, ‘quit after a couple of months’.
Of course, her bosses approach to punctuality didn’t sit too well with other social media users, who were quick to slam the idea as ‘hilariously pathetic’ and even illegal.
One user pointed out that working the extra time for being late without being paid would push staff wages below the minimum wage.
Another person wrote: “Boy I hope they like paying overtime. Or paying people to literally just stand around for an extra twenty minutes because they know this rule is b***s***.”
The user then added: “How the f*** can people think this is a good idea?”
Though another worked out that under those rules, arriving at the office fifty-four minutes early would mean a member of staff was already finished for the day.
