Asda Smart Price weekly shop costing just £28 sparks debate among shoppers
The £28.07 display included tinned goods, chocolate and various condiments
As the cost of living soars to record highs, a social media post showing how far £28 can stretch among Asda’s Smart Price range has been dividing opinions.
Asda recently expanded its Smart Price line across all of its stores following fierce campaigning from food and poverty activist Jack Monroe, who highlighted how the cost of inflation is affecting financially vulnerable households across the country.
Following the supermarket’s widely-praised move, customer Gary Oakley tweeted a photograph from his local Asda store, where staff had displayed £28.07 worth of Smart Price products.
The table featured an array of items, such as fruit cordial, cereals, canned vegetables, condiments, sweet treats and toilet roll.
Monroe replied to the photo, writing: “Eyyyyyy what store is this? LOVE this!”, before saying if the store wasn’t four hours away she would ‘go and stand in front of it and feel all pleased’.
However, not everyone shared Monroe’s enthusiasm for the Smart Price selection, with many pointing out the lack of fresh fruit, vegetables and meats.
Responding to a query as to what meals could be made with the selection of products, one social media user wrote: “A bowl of rice with strawberry jam on top.
“Yes it’s a start but almost everything on that table is processed. Where is the fresh fruit and veg? That’s far more important than cheap chocolate and jam.”
Another person noted: “Great that it’s cheap, but it’s not especially healthy. It’s no wonder that things like malnutrition, obesity and diabetes are so endemic if this is offered up as a solution to price hikes.”
Though some social media users pointed out that ‘eating anything is better than eating nothing’, noting that those on a tight budget won’t necessarily be prioritising healthy and nutritious products.
One person highlighted the healthier aspects of the shop, writing: “The left side tins include fruit and veg. Sardines are fish. Corned beef is meat. Jack wrote a whole book (and donated 100s of copies to food banks) that would make this work.”
