Caravan holidays could be back soon but camping not until next year

Caravan holidays could be allowed this summer for Brits as they are ‘naturally socially distancing’, but camping trips may not return until next year. 

A spokesperson for the British Holiday & Home Parks Association (BH&HPA), Jon Boston, told the Sun that holidays could be back on the menu by July if the government targets are met.

He said: “There is no definite date, but we hope for July. We are looking at parks opening in a phased way, so it won’t be a free-for-all.

“It is likely that parks will start opening by having back people who own caravans, with a second phase seeing rented caravans and lodges opening, followed by a third phase of touring caravans.”

While communal areas such as cafes, swimming pools and bars will remain closed, caravan parks can reopen due to the self-contained nature of the facilities. 

Caravans are also naturally socially distancing with usually 5-6 metre between homes. 

One camping and holiday park, Pitchup.com, has reported a 135% increase in bookings since the last speech by the prime minister, with bookings from July until next summer. 

There are new proposals that could see the seasons lasting longer, with caravan parks staying open later in the year.
