Manchester United are considering sending Mason Greenwood out on loan for next season while they conduct an internal investigation, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has not played for United since January last year after he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February.

The Crown Prosecution Service stated that ‘in this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction’.

However, the club’s internal investigation into the striker remains ongoing. According to the Mail Online, the club are considering allowing Greenwood to leave on loan for the entirety of next season.

The report claims that a move to another Premier League club is highly unlikely, while a move abroad to either Italy, Spain or Turkey could be on the cards for the footballer.

Greenwood, who still has two years remaining on his £75,000-a-week contract, has expressed his desire to return to the first-team squad at the club, it is understood.

The striker, who has an England cap, was suspended by United when the allegations were first made in January 2022.

Sending him overseas would give the club time to come to a final decision on Greenwood’s future at Manchester United.

However, the prospect of bringing the player onboard may pose a problem for some ownership groups. Those with knowledge of the situation say a move to an American-owned club, such as AC Milan, could prove difficult.

There would also have to be an agreement over salary as Greenwood has remained on full pay throughout.

The situation is a complex one and United are wary of the views of the dressing rooms of both their men’s and women’s teams. It is also further complicated by the ongoing takeover process at Old Trafford.
