The wife of ‘hero’ taxi driver David Perry has released an update on her husband, saying he’s ‘lucky to be alive’.

Rachel Perry took to social media to reveal that her husband is ‘extremely sore’ and ‘trying to process what’s happened’, while also thanking NHS staff and emergency services.

She wrote: “I would just like to thank each and every one of you who have messaged asking how David is.

“He is doing OK but is extremely sore and just trying to process what’s happened.

“There are a lot of rumours flying around about him being a hero and locking the passenger inside the car, but the truth of the matter is, he is without doubt lucky to be alive.”

The post continues: “The explosion happened whilst he was in the car and how he managed to escape is an utter miracle.

“He certainly had some guardian angels looking over him.

“I would like to thank the amazing staff, doctors and nurses at the hospital, you were all amazing and also the police officers and detectives who have been looking after us.

“We’re so thankful.”

The dad-of-two picked up the suspect who asked to be taken to the Women’s Hospital from Rutland Avenue , just before the two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday at 11am.

The taxi’s passenger was the only person to die in the explosion, with Mr Perry now discharged from hospital after suffering eardrum damage, as well as cuts and bruises.

The Mayor of Liverpool praised Mr Perry, thanking the cabbie for helping to divert ‘what could have been an absolutely awful disaster’.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Ms Anderson said: “The taxi driver, in his heroic efforts, has managed to divert what could have been an absolutely awful disaster at the hospital.

“Our thanks go to him and our emergency services, and authorities have worked through the night to divert anything further and we’ve all been on standby and in constant contact to provide any support that’s needed.”

Four people have now been arrested in relation to the incident, with the UK’s terror threat level rising to ‘severe’ yesterday.
