You may have seen recently that popular ridesharing app Uber was stripped of its licence down in London.

And now the same thing could be happening up here, as Manchester City Council has requested an emergency meeting with the company to voice concerns about its safety standards.

Uber executives have been called to the meeting to also answer claims they are ‘undermining local licensing standards’ by flooding Manchester with vehicles from other areas, the Manchester Evening News reports.

On Monday, November 25th, the company were refused a new licence to operate in the capital, because of repeated safety failings.

According to Transport for London, they found ‘several breaches that placed passengers and their safety at risk’, including 14,000 trips by drivers who were not the people that appeared on the app.

Uber says it plans to appeal the decision, which it describes as ‘extraordinary and wrong’, but in the meantime a number of other councils besides Manchester are considering a ban on the app.

What do you think? Is Uber unsafe or should they be allowed to operate in our city?
