Granada Reports presenter Tony Morris will be laid to rest today in a private funeral with his family.
Tony, 57, died on August 1st at Bury Hospice after being diagnosed with kidney cancer last year.
He was a much-loved presenter of Granada Reports, hosting the show for the past 17 years.
His online Book of Condolence has now received thousands of tributes from viewers, as well as thousands of donations to Bury Hospice in Tony’s name.
The Hospice received £13,000 in donations from the public along with hundreds of cards and messages from around the country just last week.
His daughter, Natalie Morris, who is also a journalist, said while speaking to the Guardian that it was undeniable her father inspired others but he never viewed himself as a role model.
Natalie added: “I know now how difficult it can be being the only non-white face in newsroom meetings but he was doing it 20 years ago. It can’t have been easy but it’s a testament to his talent and his resilience how he broke down these barriers and paved the path for a new generation.”
His daughter Natalie announced her father’s passing on Twitter last week with a statement that read: “We lost our incredible dad on Saturday morning. He was more than a parent, he was also our best friend.
“We are utterly heartbroken, but so grateful for the time we had with him We will be offline with family for a while, but so appreciative of the lovely messages.”
She added: “We ask that rather than sending flowers people make a donation to Bury Hospice. We will forever appreciate the care, kindness and respect that the wonderful nurses provided for dad.”
Many people expressed their condolences via Twitter. One user wrote: “So sorry to hear this. He felt like a friend to so many with his smile. My Grandmother absolutely loved watching ‘her Tony’ before she passed away. Thoughts with you all”
