Tescos is making some huge changes to its stock in its Express stores to help people during the cost-of-living crisis.

The supermarket giant announced it is going to replace more than 50 everyday items with cheaper alternatives for shoppers, including items from its own-brand range.

Some items could cost less than a third of items they will be replacing, Tesco says.

Own-brand items which will now be sold include penne pasta (85p), Tesco frozen garden peas (£1.65), Tesco basmati rice pouches (75p) and Tesco smooth peanut butter (£1.65).

Some branded products such as toothpaste will be replaced with a cheaper alternative, and some packs of branded nappies will also be sold at a discounted price of up to 40% in Express stores.

The move comes as Tesco looks to stay competitive as other discount retailers offer similar products at lower prices and have seen sharp rises in sales, as people hunt for bargains through the current financial climate.

Tesco Convenience Managing Director Sarah Lawler said: “We know customers are watching every penny at the moment, so we hope these helpful product swaps will bring down food bills for even more families.

“Our Express stores offer unbeatable value on everything from essentials to fresh produce, making healthy food more accessible for the 2,000 communities that we serve across the UK.

“And while our convenience stores don’t have the shelf space to carry the full range of our larger shops, by swapping these products, we’ve been able to make way for even more of our great-value own brand ranges.”
