Rochdale woman fined twice in one day for refusing to wear face mask in shop

A woman in Rochdale has been fined twice in one day for refusing to wear a face covering while shopping in a supermarket. 

Police in Rochdale are now operating daily dedicated ‘Covid-19 patrols’ and in doing so, landed a shopper with two fines for not wearing a face mask.

Officers on patrol are handing out face masks in partnership with the council, while also offering support and advice to individuals.

However, while out at an unnamed supermarket, a woman entered around 1pm not wearing a face mask, causing the officers to enforce the government rules and issue a fine. 

After being given a face mask, refusing to put it on without providing a valid exemption reason, the woman was issued a £100 fine. 

The same woman was seen again shortly after the event without wearing a face covering.

After refusing to wear one again, the police issued her with another £100 fine.  

Wearing a face covering in supermarkets and shops has been mandatory since July 24th and fines were put in place for those who refuse. A list of those exempt was released at the time, including children under 11 and those with certain disabilities. 

However, fines can be halved if paid within fourteen days. 

Speaking of the incident, Rochdale police said: “Wearing a face covering can help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and the regulations are there to protect everyone.

“Please remember to wear one in line with the legal requirements set out by the Government.

“Our officers are there to offer support and guidance but will enforce the regulations when there is a clear breach.”

The news was shared on GMP Rochdale’s Facebook page and the response has been varied. 

One user wrote ‘Is this really about a virus with a 99.9% recovery rate or more about population control’, while another added ‘expensive shopping trip for her then ay just for being stubborn unlucky love’.
